For a house-warming gift, our realtor gave us a house plant when we moved into this new home. I had never had one before and going by previous experiences with plants in pots....I wasn't feeling too hopeful. We have had it more 4 months and have kept it high on the shelf. Honestly, I forget about it often. I rarely water it, like every 3 weeks (if its lucky). And the only time it gets some direct sunlight is when I take off the book shelf for a couple of hours if I actually think about it. Today I thought about it, thinking it would do the plant some good. Despite my neglectful ways it seemed like it is a pretty happy houseplant. As my girls napped I was dusting the master bedroom (and watching Olympics) when I heard what sounded like papers being scattered. I go out to investigate, thinking I would find one of the girls out playing, but this is what I found.

Is there any hope for my plant? I tried tying some string around the middle but it all plopped back over. Any suggestions or is my first house plant doomed?

And clearly I haven't yet cleaned up the mud or dirt that has spilled.
If the stem is broken or bent really good, then cut it off. Otherwise, water it and let it soak up some sun over the next couple of days and see what happens. I love plants! I think the greenery makes any home feel more welcoming. I have 4 plants in just the main part of my house. LOVE LOVE LOVE Greens!
I love the greenery too, we have a lot of fake plants!! :) This real guy is our first!
I can't believe you've never had a house plant before! I think they for sure make the house, so long as they are the proper proportion and in good condition :)
I don't have any advise on how to revive it, but Pam's suggestions sound good!
Morgan it looks to me like it needs to be re-potted, it looks to big for the pot that it is in. If you don't know how to re-pot it let me know and I can tell you how. Also do as Pam suggested and cut the broken stems completely off. Also I would look up on the internet and make sure that the plant isn't poisonous just in case your little kitty feel mischievous again. You can buy kitty grass at Wal-mart, that you grow until it is a few inches long and then let your cat eat it, they go crazy for it!
I love the picture! Little Penny looks like she couldn't care less about her crime, but that it was the plant's fault for being there. Like a true cat. I learned when we were new cat owners that all plants and flowers were doomed- if I ever have a plant in my house I have to lock it in a room when I leave to protect it from the cats. Otherwise, it'll be strewn across the house and dead by the time I get back.
I can't believe this is your first real plant! Welcome to the real plant world girl.
I think your little plant will be fine. When mine get looking that sad I soak it with water and put it in a spot where it will get sun/shade. I think it'll make it though.
And go get some more real plants, I think you'll be pleasently surprised how much freasher and cleaner the air in your home will smell.
Yep, its true. This is our first real plant...other than our outdoor garden.
I don't think Penny ate the plant, I think she just pounced on it. It is usually up and way out of site for her, it just was too big of a temptation I guess.
I will try re-potting it in a bigger (better looking) planter. Hopefully it survives. Thanks everyone!
yes, your plant can be saved. It is a Nephytis and they tend to get leggy like yours is right now. What you need to do is to cut off all the shoots leaving about 1/2" of stem above the dirt. These will releaf. You can then take the shoots you cut off and root them to fill in your old plant or create a new plant. You will notice on the stem that there are some liitle brown nubs-this is a rooting joint. You want to come up the stem and cut the last one closest to your leaves. Then place in water. It will take 2-3 weeks for them to root. They can be repotted when the roots are about 2" long. With your old plant, it would help to top dress the soil by scooping out a couple of inches of soil around the plants without disturbing them and replace it with new soil. It will help your plant come back stronger. If you have any questions let me know. Diane
Do you have a Star Nursery down there? There is a product called Dr. Q's plant tonic or something like that. I swear it revives anything and will be great for plants outside too.
