Mother Birdie

Yes, that is me...or that is what I reminded myself of just after lunch today.

Corky's mom bought some really yummy cherries while she was visiting us, and lucky for us, she left them here! (Thanks Grandma Jean) So today after lunch I thought it would be good to share a bowl with the girls. I was all prepared to do all the pitting with my plate, trusted paring knife, and a napkin...because you know things are going to get messy. After cutting the first cherry in half, digging out the pit, and making a royal cherry-juice mess, I decided to give up the attempt to have manners. After that, I just popped a cherry in my mouth, split it with my teeth, spit the pit out onto the plate and placed a cherry half into both Gracey and Emily's mouth. Yes, I placed it into their mouths. I wasn't about to give them free reign to an open cherry. That just spells cherry stain disaster.

You may have seen it on the Discovery channel or remember it from school, but you'll recall that when freshly hatched birdies are wanting food from their mother they are not very patient. They crank their necks up, open their mouths, and squeel. That was basically Emily today. I couldn't pit those cherries fast enough. Thankfully Gracey is more patient.

After I told the girls this would be their last one, Gracey asked "Mom, have you eaten one?" Come to think of it, I hadn't. So I enjoyed one or two cherries that I actually could swallow! They were good. Cherries are one of the perfect summer fruit...or in my girls case "ABC Cherries."

Jesus wants me for a SUNBEAM! Again

If you are really perceptive and assumed from the title that I am the new sunbeam teacher...you are correct! Let's start this off with a little bit of honesty, shall we? We went calling-free in our new ward for 2 months. That was a shock all by itself because in the branch we just moved from, the bishop literally shakes his hand to introduce himself as he sets up a meeting to extend you call....sometimes two callings! You get scooped up pretty quick. While it was a little frustrating at first because I was so anxious to feel a sense of belonging here, I finally convinced myself to enjoy it while it lasted.

Corky and I were extended callings the same day. He was asked to be the Deacon's Quorum advisor and I was asked to be the Sunbeam teacher....Gracey's class. I accepted of course but our bishop asked if I had reservations. I simply said that I had been in the primary for so long, not to mention how it might be difficult to teach Gracey's class. I didn't mention that I had been praying for 2 months that of all the callings that I might get, I prayed to NOT get nursery or sunbeams. He then proceeded to tell me that as a bishopric they had been stewing over this particular calling for me for quite sometime and feel strongly that I should be in there. So I smiled, accepted and said "Apparently I have not learned all the lessons yet that I am supposed to!" The bishop left our house, I closed the door and began to cry. What's the big deal you ask? Well, normally it probably wouldn't be but for me it is. Although I feel that I am good with children that age, I don't particularly like it. I find it very frustrating to be with a bunch of 3-4 year olds that won't sit still, pick their nose, pull their gum out of their mouth, and growl at each other, all while I am trying to "teach" a simply lesson on loving one another.

I received this calling 2 weeks before I had to start actually teaching so I had plenty of time to ponder and think about what I can gain from this, or what I may have to offer. One day as I was blow-drying my hair, it occurred to me what that was. For quite sometime now, I have realized that I expect a lot out of Gracey. She is a very smart girl. So when I see her misbehaving or acting out, I get quite upset. I am not as patient as I would like to be and have been asking for help and guidance in my prayers on how I can be a more patient and loving mother. I fear that I will drive her away with my expectations and reactions. Like I said, I was blow-drying my hair when I had the thought that this calling is exactly what I need to learn to treat Gracey more like the 3 year old she is and not a 10 year old that should know better. I scanned the lessons for the Sunbeam class and the lessons are so simple. For example, they include "I am thankful for my eyes", "I am thankful for my ears","Music can make me Happy", etc. They are simple but brilliant.

Yesterday was my first day teaching. This class is by far the most restless class in all of primary and I got a lot of "good lucks" from fellow teachers. I took a lot of things that I learned from Ft. Irwin and applied them just yesterday. We took turns being line leaders instead of running (yes, they usually ran) to their classroom. I made them spit their gum out, and I made them put their papers under their chair. I hope that doesn't sound to "Hitler-ish" but I wanted to do what I could to teach them reverence. After those things were done, we had fun. I was laughing almost the entire time during class at the silly things these kids would say. Just one example was when I introduced myself I said that my name is "Sister Whipple." I asked them to repeat that and they did, with the exception of one girl who for some reasons couldn't pronounce it very well, it came out as "Slipper Nipple!" I waited to laugh out loud until I could tell Corky....we had a good laugh at that one.

After making it through the class, Corky and I were set apart. I must say that it was one of the most spiritual experiences I have had come from a blessing. The Bishopric was truly inspired with every word that came out and I had confirmation that, just as I thought, my children will be blessed because of me having this calling, among other statements made. By the end of the blessing, I was bawling like a baby and spiritually touched by the love that I felt.

I can't say that I will whole-heartily enjoy this calling, it will be a challenge, but I look forward to doing my best and learning the lessons that I am supposed to.

On another note..................

We had company this weekend. Bailey and Skyler came for a visit...but of course I didn't take a single picture! We had a really good time together though. Emily had quite the "aunt bailey crush" and didn't want anything to do with me as long as Bailey was in the room!

Because I didn't take any pictures of Bailey and Skyler, I suppose I will play a little picture catch up and post pictures of the previous weekend when my mom, step dad, Markie, Reggie, and my Grandma Annie came to visit. That was a fun weekend too! We love having visitors!

We spent some time in downtown Kingman, playing on the old train, eating snow cones in the shade, and playing a little ball.

All dressed and ready to go to church. It was also Father's Day so we had to get one with the big daddy himself!

And visitors don't stop there! Tomorrow, Corky's mom, sister, and Grandma are coming for a few days to visit! I LOVE living so close to family!

Happy Birthday Edward Cullen!

My lovely friend Sariah made this post today on her blog, and I thought it was so great that I decided to steal it and post it as well. Thanks Sariah!!

He is 107 today and I'm wondering what does one do to celebrate their 107th birthday?

If there's a thunderstorm nearby, he could play ball with his family...

Or perhaps he could compose another lullaby...

Or marry Bella Swan...

So, Happy Birthday Edward! You know we all love you! ;)

If you're thinking, What? Who's this Edward?...

Review of May

Since I was in my own little posting funk during May, I decided to play a little bit of catch up. Here goes nothing.
May started out with celebrating my birthday at Chili's. Emily really loved the salsa and after about 20 minutes of shoveling it into her own mouth, we decide to take out the camera just in time to capture her getting a spicy bite. I heard that chocolate soothes a flaming mouth....she liked that idea too!
Then Emily made funny faces at the camera.
The beginnings of my garden was born.
In the middle of May, the temperature was beginning to get a little warm. We thought it would be fun to take the girls up about 10 miles away to Hualapai Mountain Park. There they have camping, hiking, picnic areas, playgrounds, and most fun of all...cooler temperatures. Its nice to live somewhere surrounded by so many different climates.
May 20th, the girls and I drove on up to St. George for a fun filled couple of days. We got to go to Grandma Joyce's, Uncle Jared, and Skyler's softball game.
We helped Markie celebrate her 18th birthday.
We got to hang out with a lot of family that is normally not all in the same place at the same time.
Then we went to Markie's high school graduation. This is where Emily tried on Aunt Bailey's glasses.
And Gracey stole some flowers from Markie's bouquet and then announced that she was getting married! :)
And then Markie finally did it! Congratulations MAR!!!
Then we drove back home where we met up with Corky's brother Audie, and his wife Candice. They have 2 little boys. Blaise, who is 4 days older than Gracey, and Peyton, who will be 1 year old next month. We always have a good time together and are so happy to be living a little bit closer. Anyway, they came for Memorial Day weekend and Blaise and Gracey got to go to a pirate party!
Corky and Audie got to spend a lot of time playing XBOX.
And the kids had a good time playing together. (except Blaise doesn't look too glad in this picture!) :)
During the month of May, Gracey and Emily played a lot of princess. Dressing up was an everyday occurrence there for a couple of weeks.
And finally, Emily got her very first little hair trim. Her bangs were falling in her face all the time and I couldn't take it anymore. Anyone have any tricks on how to get hair on the side of her head to grow. It is growing excellent in the back and top....if only the sides would do the same. She's still cute though!!!! We like her.
If you stuck with me through that whole thing.....you are quite the trooper!! Anyway, there is May. It was fun.

Happy News!

My sister/bff, Bailey is getting MARRIED!!!! Her and her main squeeze, Skyler, finally made it official last night. We are so excited for them, we love them both so much. Skyler fits right into the family (looks like he could too, huh?) and he loves Bailey lots and lots. Bailey is so happy!

We love you Bailey and Skyler....can't wait for the big day! September 13th!

Listen here, peeps.

I took my music player off my page a while back because I knew it would interfere with the Twilight Trailer I posted. After having it off for a while, I really grew to miss it. I would often times open up my blog and just listen to my playlist while I did my computer duties. As a favor to you all though, I turned auto-play off. So if you want to listen to what I believe is one of the better playlists of these days, just push play and enjoy.

p.s. Still loving Penny. For not ever considering myself a cat-person, I sure love that thing.

A new addition.

Yesterday, we added a new member to the Whipple clan. Everybody, meet Penny!

Yesterday we were all out and about running some errands when Corky was going to get his haircut. The girls and I decided to go to the Petco that was in the same shopping center, just to look at the birds, fish, and whatever animals they had. We got there and saw they had an animal adoption agency there with some cats, mostly kittens. We pet a couple here and there but then went on our way looking at the other animals. As we were about to leave Petco, I saw a lady holding a sweet little kitten that was irresistible, and I am not a huge cat-person. So I asked the lady if we could hold her. She sat in Gracey's lap and purred for a good 10 minutes. Then Emily wanted a turn. This kitten continued to purr even though Emily isn't the most gentle with animals. A few minutes later Corky showed up. I made it clear that we were just holding the kitten because I wasn't sure if I even wanted it. When he asked to hold her I thought "uh-oh, we might be getting ourselves a cat today!" We told the lady we would continue running errands and we would think and talk about it.

So we did talk about it. The only thing that seemed to hold us back was the commitment AND our leather couches that we got only a little over a year ago. I decided to call my parents and get their advice. I knew my dad would be all for it but I was sure that my mom would convince me not to. Mainly because her and my step dad's motto's is "life begins when the kids move out and dog dies!" To my surprise, my mom told me that every cat she has ever had was a great experience and she loved them all so much.

So when the girls were taking their naps, I went and picked up our new baby. She has been fixed and has her shots, so that makes us happier too.

Before the girls woke up from their naps, Corky and I got our chance to play with her on our own.

Then we woke up the girls and they both were so happy.

We played with her all night and I think I only heard her not purr one time, when she was in a deep sleep, sleeping cozy among my shoes.

So this is a big deal for us, or me really. After 5 years of marriage, we finally took the plunge and got a pet of our own. I think she feels at home, she slept with me and Corky all night and kept us awake with her purr!

Daddy/Daughter

Corky just took Gracey golfing with him and Gracey couldn't have been more excited! She loves to tag along in the golf cart and get out and hit with her plastic club. I can't wait to hear all about it when they come home.

Emily is taking her morning nap...so guess what I am going to do? I am going to join her. Heaven! Awww! The simple joys.

Until then...

And May pictures will be posted this week! I am off for the night. I need to go plug away at a few more pages of "The Host" while I have the kiddos in bed!

At the end of April we ventured on up to the Salt Lake area. We stayed pretty busy visiting friends and family, but the main reason for our trip was because Corky's best friend from college was getting himself hitched! Corky and Ammon were seriously partners in crime when they were in college. I remember thinking one time that I wasn't so much dating Corky as I was dating "Corky and Ammon!" We both love him and are so happy for him.

These pictures were at Temple Square when him and Allison were getting their bridal/wedding pictures taken. They both looked wonderful and it was a gorgeous (but cold) day. My girls sure had fun though smelling all the flowers and playing in the water.

While up there, Corky got to see his mission president and his wife for the first time since coming home from his mission. Corky and President Johns have kept in touch over the years but it was so great for them to catch up face to face. They made me feel so nice and comfortable and I was so happy to finally meet them. After visiting them for a few hours, Corky and I took the girls to a place in Lindon called "Jump On It!" Oh my gosh, it was so fun! It was a huge warehouse just full of trampolines. We could have stayed all day.

Then it was the big day for Ammon and Allison! Everyone and everything was gorgeous. The wedding was beautful, the luncheon at the JSM Building was wonderful, and the reception was gorgeous! It seemed the day was flawless until Gracey puked in the kitchen at the reception. Luckily, Ammon's older sister is an E.R. doctor so she was the first to help me out, since not much grosses her out anymore. 5 minutes later nobody would have guessed it, it was all back to perfect.

Fun in Snowflake

In April we also went to Grandma Jean's and Old Grandma Ruby's house in Snowflake. Gracey got her stitches taken out (finally calming down enough to allow Grandma Jean to do it), both girls rode on Old Grandma's buggy, and Emily helped me sew a quilt.

Then we went and looked at all the cute new baby animals that were just born. The big hit though was the horse. Emily liked riding old "Spook" around.

And here is a reason that I am SO HAPPY to not be a cow. This cow had given birth only a few hours before and was now chomping away at the after-birth. Deee-sgusting!

Remember me mentioning Gracey had to get stitches? I am finally posting the pictures from that. Slacker!

Let's see where this goes.

It has been nearly a month since I posted, and even those posts weren't real meaningful. To be quite honest, I have just been in some sort of funk. Not just with blogging, but with everything. This move was a little bit more difficult than I had anticipated, but I am happy to say that things are moving up and I am getting really excited about a lot of things coming up.

I suppose I will start with why things have been a bit more difficult for me than normal. I am a social person. I love being around people all the time and I love when my children have the chance to interact with other children. Often times that means for me interaction with other adults. Living on a military installations, basically since being married, you can get used to a few luxuries. (My blogging/army wife friends Holly, Amber, Jessica, Mindy, Ashley and Christy are probably laughing at my use of "luxury" especially coming from Ft. Irwin!) Really though, you live on a military base surrounded by hundreds and hundreds of young families with children about the same age as yours. More importantly than that, everybody has a lot of things in common, such as spouses in the army that are working around the clock, that are deployed, that are preparing for a deployment, or just finished one. Even more so than all of that is the fact that most everybody is far away from where they call "home." You are surrounded by an immediate group of friends that would do anything for you and are eager to help, knowing you would do the same for them.

With all that said, living now in the civilian life, still not living near family or friends, the adjustment just wasn't as easy. I actually didn't anticipate it being this difficult. We moved into a ward that is full of empty nesters. I didn't see anybody there that seemed to be about my age nor did I see any kids that were my own kids ages. The first few weeks were quite difficult for me and my girls. We didn't know anybody until I got word of another ward's weekly playgroup. I, being desperate and un-shy, took my girls to it. It has been a blessing to finally have met other mom's and children.

Since then, I am so happy to learn that there are in fact young people in our ward. They were just either gone the day we arrived or I didn't notice since they either work with the youth or in the Primary. Things are looking up and looking promising and I can feel myself getting out of this slump that I have been in.

With all the hard adjustments that have been made, life is still really good. We have travelled a lot, visited lots of people, and gone to a lot of fun events such as weddings and graduations. I have an excellent husband who loves me and treats me better than I have ever deserved. I have two gorgeous girls to always play and laugh with. And we are comfortable in our new home. With all that I have to be grateful for, I feel like I am being very ungrateful when I gripe about "social issues"! I am just learning that I am better wife and mother when I can have adult interaction everyday with other mom's. I am just going to now have to work harder to do that. That is one thing that I definitely took for granted.

Anyway, just writing this makes me feel better. It feels good to explain why I have been absent from posting. I know that it might be good for others to be reminded how much women need each other. I don't consider myself needy or clingy....I just love to be surrounded by people.

Marjorie Pay Hinckley once said, "We are all in this together. We need each other. Oh, how we need each other. Those of us who are old need you who are young. And, hopefully, you who are young need some of us who are old. It is a sociological fact that women need women. We need deep and satisfying and loyal friendships with each other. These friendships are a necessary source of sustenance. We need to renew our faith every day. We need to lock arms and help build the kingdom so that it will roll forth and fill the whole earth."

Isn't that the truth?

This makes me giddy.

I must admit, I WAS NOT happy when "Cedric" was chosen as Edward. Watching that trailer though I am finally seeing it. Corky just rolls his eyes at me. He refuses to even watch the trailer but he promises he'll go to the movie with me. Now if only I could trick him into reading the book.

You know it.

We got carpet installed on Thursday. I love it, it turned out better than I had hoped. Wouldn't you know it though, not 2 hours after having the carpet guys leave, (1 hour and 37 minutes to be exact) Emily throws up on it. Am I bad mom for not even feeling sorry for her at the time. I mean, she wasn't dying. She just up-chucked some apple chunks from lunch time. I admit that my first words were "ARE YOU KIDDING ME? On my new carpet?" They probably should have been "Sweetie, are you okay? She forgives me though.

The past few days I have been fighting off the flu. Luckily the only symptoms have been nausea, achiness, and sleepiness. None of the yucky bathroom symptoms showed up (I kept my bowl near me at all times just in case...Heaven knows I wasn't going to puke on my brand new carpets like somebody else did!) Anyone Else's skin hurt when they have the flu? Even the affectionate rubbing on my arm from my husband was painful and I had to tell him to stop.

Lastly, our mail has been being forwarded to our new house for the last month. We have received all of our bills, bank statements, and medical statements (thank you Gracey and your stitches!) You know, all the things that you try to pretend don't exist so long as you don't see them. Well, a few days ago as I was checking our bank account online, I noticed that our credit card was charged for my next Proactiv kit. However, I forgot to change my account information to my new address. I have been anxiously awaiting its arrival, hoping the forwarding works with large packages as well as letters. I haven't received it and can't help but wonder if the new people in our old house our getting a free trial of Proactiv, courtesy of me! If I were them, I suppose I would forward on the bills too but conveniently forget to forward the good stuff. Don't they know that I know where they live? Okay, so I don't think my proactiv was stolen but I do want it soon. Those tiny little bottles of miracle are pricey.

Even though this might seem like a grump post, I am actually in a happy mood. My house is coming together, I got a chance to work on the beginnings of my garden, and I had a really enjoyable evening with the hubby and the kiddos. Just wanted to sit and ramble I guess.

Finally our house.

I have been really excited to post pictures of our new house, even though it is far from being all put together. New carpeting will be installed in a few weeks, we have yet to build the pantry, no painting has been done, and there are still lots of boxes to be unpacked. Despite all of that, we are really excited to be living here.

Where to start? Here is the front of the house.

As you walk into the front entry, this is the view of the living room.

This is the opposite side of the living room. Originally we thought we would put carpeting down in this room, but once we got here we realized it will be nice. Especially with it being a heavy traffic area.

Going back to where you first walk in, to your left is a small hallway where you will see the guest bedroom, the girls bedroom, the bathroom, and the coat/game and toy closet. This is what our soon to be guest room looks like now. At the moment it is our "catch all" room. Please excuse the disaster.

Right next to that room is the girl's bedroom. The bedrooms in this house are quite a bit smaller than our last house, so I am feeling this room is kind of crowded. We might be getting bunk beds, but that is a ways down the road. I am still undecided on how I want to decorate their room. I have never painted or done anything fun, so we will see how it turns out eventually.

Here is one angle of the room....

then the other.

Here is the girl's bathroom. The night we walked into our house for the first time, I immediately told Corky that I wanted to have the sliding shower doors taken off. It makes it a little difficult to bathe little kids with it, and more importantly the cute shower curtain that we have used for a couple of years would go to waste. We couldn't let that happen. Without having to ask him, that was the first "honey-do" that Corky did the next morning. Here is before.

then after!

Now here we have the office/craft room. It didn't look too bad at one point but then we had to shuffle a bunch of stuff around and now this is how it currently sits as we wait for a few more things to get done.

On to the dining room. I love how open it is right now, but it will be changing soon. On that bare wall in the back, that is where we will have the pantry built. You can see in the following picture that on top of the wall is potting shelf. We will build the pantry to be symmetrical to that, molding and all. We think it will look nice. Besides, I don't know how much longer I can go without having a pantry. You can only cram so much into a cupboard.
another angle.

As much as I am over my apple-themed kitchen that I have had for almost 5 years, I don't know what else I would do and I don't want a completely bare kitchen....so the apples stay for now. I don't mind them as much anymore, or maybe it is just that I am excited for my new kitchen.

Here is our master bedroom. What I love most is that I don't have to zigzag between my bed and furniture to get to the bathroom.

And finally, the master bathroom. Why is that the bathrooms always get finished off before anything else? In my case, because they are the smallest and less work. You spend hardly any time in them but walk away feeling like you have accomplished at least something.

And I think that is about it. Our carpet has been ordered and will go into each of the bedrooms. The backyard isn't anything to die for but it isn't nearly as small as I thought it was. It has no grass or landscape of any kind. other than weeds, random rose bushes, and what we think is an apricot tree. (our neighbor Bob at least thinks that is what it is)

Sorry for all the pictures but thanks for looking. We are excited and feel very fortunate to live here. Things worked out for us perfectly and we look forward to being here for a long time.
